ACTIVITIES
HIKING, CLIMBING, BIKING AND RIDING The terrain in the area is very varied. There are soft hills for walking and steep trails for those who want the exercise. Often one side of a ridge is steep and the other side is soft. If you want to climb on the mountains there are climbing schools for both children and adults. There are several mapped trips for both hiking and biking. In the summer months there are many cyclists especially when the Tour de France comes through the area. There are many well-known routes varying in difficulty where you can start and end at the same spot without using the same path twice. In Nebias there is a riding camp for children. Furthermore, it is possible to rent horses for guided tours in the area.
CANOE, KAYAK AND RIVER RAFTING Along the rivers in the area there are several places to rent canoes, kayaks and go river rafting. As the water level varies throughout the year the rental places aren't always open. There is most water in the river from April to June. On the river in Quillan there is a slalom lane where you can practice navigating our kayak. The 25 kilometers between Quillan and Limoux is a very beautiful trip in canoe or kayak. River rafting is a popular sport in the mountain area with levels of difficulty starting with beginners to very skilled. Start in Axat for instance, and try the 12 kilometers to Quillan
BATHING AND SWIMMING 5 minutes drive from Nebias is a swimming lake where sand has been put out to make a sandy beach. Very child-friendly. A much bigger swimming lake is Lac Montbel which is located 20 minutes drive from Nebias. Here you can buy a fishing license for the lake. Quillan has a public swimming pool and spa with hot water from the mountains. Alet les Bain and Rennes le Bain have outdoor pools with warm mountain water. The Mediterranean lies 1½ hours drive from Nebias.
GOLF In Carcassonne there is a good 18-hole golf course.
SKIING There are some good ski areas. Our French neighbor recommends the following four: 1 Font-Romeu (1½ hours drive) - many ski tracks, including the difficult black ones. 2 Angles (75 minutes drive) - popular and sunny 3 Forom Pas de la Casa (75 minutes drive) - sunny, good snow (the neighbor's favorite skiing place) 4 Small skiing area near Les Angles. Sunny and not too crowded.
EXCURSIONS Andorra: 100 kilometers from Nebias – a beautiful drive. Andorra is a small tax-free country which besides a magnificent nature offers great shopping as prices are without tax. Perpignan: (80 kilometers). Beautiful city with several beautiful parks and many shops. Carcassonne: (60 kilometers). Very exciting – the old city is one big fortress. Visit the local vineyards.
